What Does Healing Really Mean?

A while ago, a friend of mine was diagnosed with stage IV cancer. She and her family tried everything they could to heal it. They tried the medical world, alternative therapies, hands-on healing and special diets, but the cancer wouldn’t go away. Finally, when the hospital suggested she go into hospice care, she asked her family, “Am I going to die?” It was so emotionally overwhelming for all that she and her family just cried together and shared their love with each other.

What is healing? Is it curing a disease? Is it finding a miraculous diet, a pill or a treatment that makes it all go away? Or can healing also mean dying---leaving this plane of existence? The concept of healing has various meanings to us. I have felt healing in so many ways in my life--not just physically but also through the other three bodies—emotional, mental and spiritual.

The emotional body is one of the four bodies that we like to tuck away in our human lives. I know I did. Perhaps that's because its love is very powerful and opens such a strong connection to our spiritual selves. I felt so much more comfortable in the mental body—figuring things out, following the rules, knowing the path to success in life—that I found the emotional body to be something extra and unnecessary. Little did I know that the emotional body held the key to my healing.

Life as a Healing Journey

About ten years ago, my mother’s cancer diagnosis shocked our whole family because she had been very healthy her entire life. Where had this cancer come from? My parents had just moved into a small cottage in a retirement community, and my mom had done her best to get through the emotional trauma of downsizing and moving out of the beautiful house they had lived in for forty-four years.

When she told me about the cancer, I heard something I never expected to hear. She said, “Maybe this is the end of my journey.” Through tears, I said, “Mom, that may be, but we can try. We can do Signature Cell Healing sessions together.”

As we did our healing sessions together several times a week, our relationship and love for each other became stronger. My mother started to meditate daily to receive guidance for her healing. I became a more intuitive healer and awakened my emotional body on new levels through the love I felt for her. After about a year and a half, when the doctor told us the PT scan was clear of cancer, we celebrated. We celebrated her healing and our love for each other that had created the healing.

As my parents grew older and more physically challenged, I had the opportunity to take care of them through their elder years. I advocated for them. I healed with them. I cried with them and grew emotionally closer to them than ever before. Unlike when I was a young adult, I didn't hesitate to hug them and tell them that I loved them. I was there when it was time for them to leave this world, and we healed to that point together.

Later, through my husband’s journey with cancer and other health challenges, I have continued to heal myself, to expand my emotional body, and to learn more about compassion, patience, empathy, and understanding life from someone else’s experience. And isn’t life more about experiencing love and healing relationships. Isn’t it really about healing the feeling of separation from a Creator who we believe is far away, yet is right here within us and all around us?

Can healing also be about dying? I believe it can be. Everyone has a life blueprint and a personal journey here on Earth. We don’t know how long it will last. Success in life isn’t measured by the length of time we spend here. I believe it’s more about the love we experience while we’re here.

Did my friend experience healing? I think she did, and her family and all her friends healed along with her in their own ways, just as we all heal with every relationship, experience and adventure we have. It’s all about love and healing, and I'm learning that it never ends.
